Not for the faint hearted this hike takes in a spectacular ridge as you move from Discovery Bay to Mui Wo the hard way.

Starting in the new town off the ferry walk past the beach and then head up to Greenmont Court. Look for a trail behind the tower block that starts a 465m climb straight up Lo Fu Tau. Here you will have a wide panorama over the north of Lantau Island and down Victoria Harbour. From the viewing point continue along the ridge following the Lo Fu Tau Country Trail.

At A Po Long you have a chance to cut off down to Mui Wo on the well trodden Tung Ching to Mui Wo trail but here you go off piste and follow ribbons straight across and up to Lin Fa Shan. At 766m it’s quite a climb but again gives you the best views over the town below – in this case Mui Wo. Continue along the ridge to Yi Tung Shan where you join the Hong Kong Trail back down to Nam Shan. Continuing with the ancient trail theme continue on down to Mui Wo and back to the ferry.
