Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
Visiting the Yak Meadow on Jade Dragon Snow Mountain offers a perfect introductory “warm-up” hike for those exploring the high-altitude wonders of Northern Yunnan. Situated at approximately 3,500 meters, the meadow provides a more spacious and tranquil alternative to the crowded Glacier Park summit. After acclimatizing in the historic Lijiang Old Town, hikers take a scenic cable car ride up to a sprawling alpine landscape where the air is thin but the views are breathtaking. The area features a gentle 5-km circuit that winds through open pastures, past a small Buddhist temple and colorful prayer flags, all while under the constant, dramatic gaze of the snow-capped mountain peaks.
The experience is defined by its rugged, natural charm—true to its name, the meadow is home to grazing yaks and a variety of high-altitude mountain flowers. While the main wooden boardwalk offers an easy 2-km loop, adventurous trekkers can stray within the marked boundaries to explore the surrounding forest and ridges, where they might find ancient yak bones or catch a glimpse of local wildlife. Despite the “intermediate” label, the altitude can still leave hikers feeling “puffy,” making it essential to pace oneself. As the weather on the mountain is notoriously unpredictable, shifting from clear skies to rain in minutes, a successful visit concludes with the realization that even a short stroll at this height is a rewarding feat of endurance and a stunning introduction to Naxi mountain culture.

Secure your tickets on WeChat Don’t wing it. Tickets for the Yak Meadow cable car are released on the “Lijiang Tourism Group” (丽江旅游集团) WeChat mini-program.
Release Time: Usually 9:00 PM the night before.
Cost: Approximately 65 RMB (includes the round-trip cable car and the internal eco-bus).
Note: You must also pay the 100 RMB mountain entrance fee, which can be paid via the same app or at the park gate.
2. Pack for four seasons Yak Meadow sits at 3,700m (12,140ft). Even if Lijiang is warm, the meadow is windy and significantly colder.
Must-haves: Windbreaker/down jacket, sunscreen (UV is intense), water, and snacks (food on the mountain is pricey).
3. Catch Bus 101 from Lijiang This is the only true public bus to the mountain.
Location: The most reliable stop is at Zhongyi Market (忠义市场), near the south gate of the Old Town.
Timing: The first bus leaves around 7:00 AM. Aim for this to beat the tour groups.
Cost: 15 RMB (payable via WeChat/Alipay or cash).
4. Pay the Mountain Entrance Fee About 40 minutes into the bus ride, the bus will stop at a toll gate. A staff member will board to check/sell the 100 RMB entrance tickets. If you bought yours online, just show your QR code and passport.
5. Arrive at the Tourist Service Center The bus ends at the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Visitor Center (Ganhaizi). This is a massive hub. Don’t get distracted by the crowds heading for the “Big Cable Car” (Glacier Park); you are looking for the Yak Meadow (牦牛坪) shuttle bus line.
6. Board the Yak Meadow Eco-Bus Follow the signs for Maoniuping (Yak Meadow). This is a separate internal shuttle. It’s a scenic 20-30 minute drive through the forest to reach the lower cable car station.
7. Ride the “Vintage” Cable Car The Yak Meadow cable car is a two-person open-air (or lightly shielded) chairlift. It’s a 20-minute ride that offers incredible, unobstructed views of the peaks.
AI Tip: Hold onto your hat! It gets very breezy as you ascend.
8. Hike the Wooden Boardwalk Loop Once at the top, there is a circular wooden boardwalk.
The Route: Walk clockwise for the best views of the “Thirteen Peaks.”
The Vibe: You’ll see Tibetan prayer flags, grazing yaks, and a small wooden temple.
Time: Allow 1.5 to 2 hours to walk the full loop at a slow pace (the altitude will make you winded).
9. Stop at Blue Moon Valley (Optional but Recommended) On your way back down via the eco-bus, you can hop off at Blue Moon Valley (White Water River). Your bus ticket usually covers this stop. The turquoise water against the white limestone is stunning and doesn’t require extra hiking.
10. Return to Lijiang via Bus 101 Head back to the main Visitor Center and find the Bus 101 stop.
Last Bus: Usually leaves around 5:00 PM – 5:30 PM.
Backup: If you miss it, look for “shared taxis” (blue minivans) that charge about 25-30 RMB per person back to the Old Town.
