Tiger Leaping Gorge

The Tiger Leaping Gorge walk is perhaps the most iconic trek in Northern Yunnan, offering a dramatic high-trail experience that towers nearly 1,000 meters above the roaring Jinsha River. While the full route spans 22 km, a popular 11-km stretch from Tina’s Guest House provides a “remarkable” perspective of the gorge, contouring along mountain faces that rise to nearly 4,000 meters. The journey begins with a steady 250-meter climb to an elevation of 2,500 meters, passing through rugged terrain protected by massive metal fences designed to catch falling boulders. Along the way, hikers encounter legendary landmarks like the “Halfway House,” famous for a balcony toilet boasting what may be the best view in the world, and viewing platforms that offer glimpses of the fabled rock where a tiger supposedly leaped the 25-meter gap to escape hunters.

Despite its fame and well-developed infrastructure—including frequent stops for food and drink—the trail remains a wild environment subject to “four seasons in one day.” Hikers must be prepared for sudden shifts from roasting sunshine to torrential rain and even stinging hail, making high-quality all-weather gear essential. The path also presents natural hazards, such as potentially lethal rockfalls dislodged from the cliffs above. The experience typically concludes by descending from the high trail to the river’s edge, where trekkers join the crowds to marvel at the sheer power of the Yangtze’s crashing white water. It is a stunning, panoramic finish to a day that balances a “gentle” high-altitude stroll with the raw, unpredictable intensity of the world’s deepest river canyons.

DIRECTIONS

1. Take the bus from Lijiang to the Lijiang Passenger Transport Terminal (丽江客运站). Buy a ticket for the bus bound for Shangri-La, but tell the driver you are getting off at Qiaotou (桥头), the gateway to the gorge.

Travel Time: ~1.5 to 2 hours.

Cost: Approx. 40–50 RMB.

2. Pay the Entrance Fee and Shuttle to the High Trail at Qiaotou. You must pay the gorge entrance fee (approx. 45 RMB). While some people hike from here, the Drone and Phone route starts deeper in. Take a local minivan (roughly 20-30 RMB) to Tina’s Guest House or Tea Horse Guest House to begin your specific section.

3. Choose Your Direction (The Pro-Tip). As noted in the script, most hikers go from Qiaotou toward Tina’s. However, starting at Tina’s Guest House and walking south toward the Halfway House means you face a steep 250-meter climb at the start.

Tip: If you want an easier walk, start at the Tea Horse Guest House and walk toward Tina’s—this direction is “mostly flat and mainly down.”

4. Navigate the “Boulders and Fences” Section. As you begin, you’ll notice massive metal fences along the cliff. These are designed to catch falling rocks. Stay alert here—rockfalls can happen suddenly, even on clear days.

5. Reach the “Halfway House” (The 5km Mark). This is a legendary stopping point. Even if you aren’t staying the night, stop for a snack and visit the famous balcony toilet. According to Michael Palin, it offers the “best view of any toilet in the world,” overlooking the 4,000m Jade Dragon Snow Mountain peaks.

6. Contour the 2,500m Line. The trail stays relatively level between 2,200m and 2,500m. You are walking roughly 1,000 meters directly above the Jinsha (Yangtze) River. The path is well-maintained but narrow in sections; always yield to oncoming hikers or local pack animals.

7. Prepare for “Four Seasons” weather. The gorge creates its own microclimate. You can experience roasting sunshine, torrential rain, and stinging hail within an hour. Ensure your all-weather gear and backpack cover are easily accessible at the top of your bag.

8. Descend to the Main Road. From the high trail, follow the marked path down toward the main road. If you finish near Tina’s Guest House, this is the central hub where hikers regroup for the trip back to Lijiang.

9. Visit the “Tiger Leaping Rock.” Before leaving, take a minivan down to the river’s edge (or walk the steep steps). Here, you can see the fabled rock in the center of the raging 25-meter gap where the tiger allegedly jumped. The power of the water at this close range is “extraordinary.”

10. Catch the Return Bus to Lijiang. Most return buses depart from Tina’s Guest House between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Booking: It is highly recommended to ask your guesthouse or the staff at Tina’s to reserve your seat on the return bus as soon as you arrive in the morning.
