Possibly Hong Kong’s most visited hike, Victoria Peak combines an easy stretch of the legs with magnificent views down Victoria Harbour and around the Western point of Hong Kong Island. 

The hike starts at the bottom of Old Peak Road and winds its way up past the Barker Road Tram stop to the Peak Tower. From there it’s a flat walk along Harlech Road to the junction with Lugard road where you can detour off to Mount High West for a 360 panorama of the Island.

After returning to Lugard road the walk makes it way around the contour as views open up down Victoria Harbour. Time the walk for early morning or sunset to really make the most of it. 

This is the easiest of the walks in the book and within reach of young children should they wish to join you on your quest.

DIRECTIONS

  1. Starting at Hillsborough Court in the Mid-Levels (just above Central) take the Old Peak Road up to Barker Road Tram Station. Built in 1888 the station retains a charm of the period that is not found at the main stations along the funicular railway.
  2. From the station, double back, continuing up to the Peak Tower. Here we would recommend not stopping as you will finish the walk at the Tower, rather cross the plaza and walk along Harlech Road. After about one kilometer, turn left at the small park following signs to Mount High West. The next section is a twenty-minute tough climb up to the viewing point, the only difficult part of the walk.
  3. If you have a head for heights continue past the platform to find better views along the ridge, before coming back the way you came down to the road. Continue round, this time taking Lugard Road as it takes you around some of the most expensive housing in Hong Kong.
  4. After about one kilometer the harbor views open up and follow you all the way back to the Peak Tower, where you can find restaurants, cafes, and shops, as well as transport back to Central.
