Hushan, Dandong

The journey begins at the very eastern end of the Ming Great Wall, in the border town of Dandong where the Yalu River separates China from North Korea. Although the original wall in this region has long disappeared, a reconstructed section allows visitors to get a feel for the starting point of the famous barrier. After a short taxi ride and ticket purchase, the hike takes you up a steep one-kilometer climb along the reconstructed wall to a large watchtower overlooking the river and across into North Korea. From the roof of the tower, the panorama brings history to life as DJ explains the shifting roles of the Great Walls of China, from Qin Shi Huang’s first fortifications to the vast brick-built Ming Wall that stretched nearly 9,000 kilometers. The climb may be tough, but the reward is a sweeping view over both countries, underscoring the strategic importance the wall once held.

The descent leads hikers back through forests and along border fences before returning to the ticket office, completing about 3.3 kilometers in total. For those with more time, an additional 15-kilometer riverside walk links Dandong directly to the wall, though rain forced DJ and Andy to skip it on this occasion. Instead, they explored Dandong further, running along the riverside promenade at sunrise and later joining a noisy but fascinating river cruise that drifted close to the North Korean shore. Sparse buildings and the occasional figure offered fleeting glimpses into life across the border. With the first stage complete, the team packed their bags for the train westward, ready to tackle more demanding sections of the Ming Wall in the episodes ahead.

DIRECTIONS

1. Start in central Dandong
From Dandong railway station or the city center, head east towards the Yalu River. Follow signs or use local maps to locate the main road (Huashan Road) that leads northeast to Hushan.

2. Walk or take a short taxi/bus ride to Hushan Great Wall entrance
The site is about 15 km from downtown. If walking, follow the road along the river northeast until you reach the Hushan Great Wall scenic area gate.

3. Enter at the Hushan Great Wall ticket office
Buy your entrance ticket and enter through the main gate to begin the loop hike.

4. Ascend the initial stair climb
Climb up the steep stone steps to reach the first towers on the ridge, gaining quick elevation and views over both Dandong and across to North Korea.

5. Follow the ridge path northward
Walk along the restored wall as it follows the ridgeline. The wall curves with towers at intervals, offering panoramic views of the Yalu River and surrounding farmland.

6. Reach the northernmost watchtower
This is the highest and furthest point on the loop. Take time to enjoy views of the river bend and the proximity to North Korea just across the water.

7. Descend the far side of the loop
Follow the wall trail as it drops down through forested slopes and restored sections until it curves back toward the entrance.

8. Exit at the base back near the ticket office
Complete the loop and return to the main gate area. From here, instead of heading straight back, turn south along the Yalu River path.

9. Walk along the Yalu River back toward Dandong
Follow the riverside walkway south. The paved riverside path is flat, scenic, and runs parallel to North Korea on the opposite bank. You’ll pass small villages, farmland, and river viewpoints.

10. Arrive back in Dandong city center
Continue along the river path until you re-enter downtown Dandong, finishing at the Broken Bridge and city riverside promenade.
