Jiayuguan
The final stage of the Great Wall adventure brought DJ and Andy to Jiayuguan in Gansu Province, the far western end of the Ming Wall. The journey began at the imposing Jiayuguan Fort, a heavily defended stronghold at the narrowest point of the Hexi Corridor, where Silk Road traders once passed and Ming soldiers devised ingenious trap systems to halt invaders. Exploring its courtyards, towers, and gruesome defensive mechanisms gave a vivid sense of the Wall’s military role. From here, they set out by car and on foot to see how the Wall adapted to its desert setting, built from rammed earth reinforced with sticks and straw. A climb to the Overhanging Great Wall at nearly 1,800 meters revealed sweeping views across snow-capped mountains to the north and the endless expanse of the Gobi Desert to the west.
To close the series, the team walked the final stretch south of the fort, timing their approach for sunset to avoid the heat and the tourist crowds. The Wall here ends dramatically as it drops off into a river valley, marking the true terminus of the Ming Dynasty’s colossal construction. After two weeks of trekking from the Korean border at Dandong to the deserts of Gansu, they reflected on the contrasts between crowded tourist hubs and lonely wild ridges, from restored battlements to crumbling earth walls. Jiayuguan offered the perfect finale—a place where mountains, desert, and history converge, symbolizing both the end of the Wall and the culmination of an extraordinary journey across China.

DIRECTIONS
This last hike is not so much a hike but rather a visit to three tourist spots at the western terminus of the wall and walking around them. There is a walk at the end if you chose not to take the bus or camels, but it is not too far and flat.
Take a taxi to the Jiayuguan Fort, to start your day and wander around. There is plenty to see and if you are lucky there will be some actors playing Ming soldiers to make it feel more real.
From there tae another taxi out to the overhanging Great Wall which will be your only climb of the day as you walk up to a viewing spot where the wall once stood guard over the Hexi Corridor.
Finally to finish your day and indeed the wall take a taxi to the Wall End, where you can walk through the desert along the final stretch of the wall to the point it ends at a huge canyon.
