Mutianyu
This classic Jiankou–Mutianyu traverse packs four Very Different Walls into one outing: wild, reconstructed, epic ridgelines, and a very modern finish. Starting higher from Yizhazi (about 620 m) for a shorter approach, the trail eases through forest before rearing into a brutal 300 m grind to reach the Wall around 970–1,020 m—complete with a farmer’s ladder to gain the first tower. From the crest the views are outrageous, with the serrated spine of Jiankou and Zhengbeilou stretching away in one direction and Mutianyu in the other. The wild Wall here is steep enough to feel like scrambling, with trees growing through bricks and the odd makeshift ladder between towers; good shoes with serious grip are essential and progress is slow despite the short distance.
Drifting off the knife-edge drama, the route meets Mutianyu’s renovated masonry and with it interpretive boards, cannons, and sweeping sightlines over the defensive valleys once cleared of trees to spot raiders. Modern comforts appear too—cable cars and even a toboggan run—though operating hours and operators vary, so the team ultimately walked down to Mutianyu village when the lower option was closed. In total they covered roughly 7–9 km, savoring a perfect contrast of raw, authentic ridge-walking and smooth, family-friendly ramparts. Expect big views, big gradients, and a reminder that on the wild sections every kilometer takes longer than you think.

DIRECTIONS
- Reach Xizhazi Village (Jiankou Base):
From Beijing, take a bus to Huairou, then a taxi to Xizhazi Village at the base of Jiankou. This is the common starting point. - Hike to the Jiankou Entrance Trail:
From Xizhazi, follow signs or local guidance up the mountain path toward the Jiankou Great Wall. It’s about a 45-minute uphill forest climb. - Arrive at Zhengbeilou Tower:
Reach the wall at the iconic Zhengbeilou (North Tower). This marks the start of your ridge walk eastward. - Traverse the ‘Sky Stairway’ Section:
Continue along the steep, narrow ridgeline. The Sky Stairway is a near-vertical climb—use hands for balance and go slowly. - Pass Over the Eagle Flies Facing Upward Tower:
Cross the photogenic “Eagle Flies Facing Upward” tower, which stands on a sharp ridge. The views here are among the best on the entire Great Wall. - Walk Through Several Crumbling Watchtowers:
Continue east along broken wall segments and partially collapsed towers toward Mutianyu. This part is rugged and slow-going. - Reach the Ox Horn Ridge Section:
Climb over the winding, sawtooth-shaped Ox Horn Ridge. It’s steep but marks the end of the toughest terrain. - Connect with the Mutianyu Western End:
After Ox Horn Ridge, you’ll gradually descend and meet the restored Mutianyu section at Tower 23. - Walk Along the Restored Mutianyu Wall:
Continue down the smooth stone steps and restored towers (Towers 23 to 10) toward the main tourist area. Enjoy easier walking and panoramic views. - Exit at the Mutianyu Visitor Center:
Take the side stairs down from Tower 10 to the cable car station and then descend to the Mutianyu visitor center, where you can catch shuttle buses or taxis back to Beijing.
