Ngong Ping
Similar to the Peak, this hike is mainly downhill with a fun trip up. Starting at the Tung Chung MTR, you take the cable car up to Ngong Ping, where you can spend time at the wax works, Big Buddha, and Po Lin Monastery.
Once the kids have had enough, start your way over to the country trail that takes you on a climb up to the highest point of the Cable Car at Nai Lak Shan, which is a great lunch spot with an amazing view over the airport. From there, it’s a long downhill following the line of the cable along boardwalks and fun stair descents. After reaching the bottom, it’s worth taking a trip across the Yu Tung Road to have a look at the Tung Chung fort before returning to the Tung Chung MTR.

Get to the start:
-
- Start at the Tung Chung MTR and follow the signs to the Ngong Ping 360 cable car. You can book ahead to save some time lining up for tickets and get a discount too if you shop around the travel apps.
- Once up to Ngong Ping, stroll along the high street, stopping at any attractions you fancy. There is also food and cafes here for a well-earned break from the ride up.
- Head up the steps of the Big Buddha (it’s free, but they ask for a donation). At the top, there is a small museum and some fantastic statues to look at.
- Once done with the Big Buddha, cross the square to have a look at the Po Lin Monastery, where you can also get a great vegetarian lunch.
- Once done, return to the roundabout, this time turning off the Lin Ping Drive and then left to the Plum Village Foundation building. There is a path to its left that provides a shortcut onto the trail that joins the Nei Lak Shan Country Trail.
- Continue up along the trail and prepare for some steep steps at the end before you reach the summit, where you join the cable car.
- Keep under the cable car up to the station, moving off the trail. At the station, the highest point, you can walk up a little hill to your left, which is a great picnic spot that overlooks the airport.
- From here, follow the cable car route as the path takes you down most of the way to Tung Chung. As the cable car goes off over the water towards the airport, your path turns right and finishes off by the water and up a path onto the main road.
- If you have the energy, cross over to look at the old fort before walking or catching a bus back to the MTR.
