Stanley to Chai Wan

This is the toughest and wildest walk on the coastal trail by a long way. Almost double all the other walks because you need to get from Stanley all the way round to Chai Wan in one long yomp

Starting off with a precarious road walk from Stanley to the Tai Tam Dam, the walk drops onto a catch water that follows the serene Tai Tam Habour. Once onto the Shek O Road you have two choices, either continue with the road around to Big Wave Bay or take the scenic route up and over the Dragon’s Back. From Big Wave Bay it’s another climb with stunning coastal views as you make your way over to Chai Wan.

DIRECTIONS

Get to the start:

  1. Set off from Stanley Plaza along the Main Street, and then up Stanley Market Road and down to Stanley Main Beach on the other side.
  2. Follow the beach and then the path that makes it’s way up to Tai Tam Road – it’s here you start a long road walk.
  3. Turning right on Tai Tam road follow it all the way to Tai Tam Dam, being careful on the sections that have no pavement.
  4. Once you cross the Dam look for a path down on the right that you take to join the Hong Kong Trail around the Tai Tam Harbor.
  5. The long path finishes at the To Tei Wan beach where you turn left up some steep steps to the Shek O Road.
  6. Here you can choose to continue on the Hong Kong Trail over the Dragon’s Back to Big Wave Bay, or choose the easier but longer route around Shek O Road all the way into Big Wave Bay.
  7. At Big Wave Bay walk to the far end of the beach where there is a trail heading up past some ancient rock carvings and up to Pottinger Peak View.
  8. As you come down cross Cape Collinson Road onto the Dragon Trail that takes you onto the promenade at Sui Sai Wan.
  9. From the end of the promenade head inland to Sui Sai Wan Road which you follow to the Chai Wan MTR.
