Antelope Canyon, Zhaoqing

Antelope Canyon in Zhaoqing offers a tranquil yet culturally rich hiking experience along a 12-kilometer ancient trail that once linked Guangdong to Guangxi. Starting from a Qing Dynasty fort, the path winds gently through a dramatic gorge carved by the Pearl River, with views of passing barges and fishing boats that echo centuries of trade and tradition. The trail is mostly flat and paved, making it accessible for families and casual hikers, while still offering glimpses of history through 18 stone bridges and weathered rope marks etched into the rocks by generations of boat haulers.

Though the journey begins with a hunt for lunch in the rural village of Huangcun, the real reward lies in the immersive walk through time. Well-marked signs and restored pavilions provide context and rest stops, while the optional 5-kilometer extension along the riverbank reveals old dwellings and vibrant local life. With its blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and easy logistics—just 90 minutes by train from Hong Kong—Antelope Canyon is a perfect one-day getaway into the heart of China’s living heritage.
