Baiyun Mountain, Guangzhou

Baiyun Mountain in Guangzhou offers a dynamic blend of urban park charm and forested retreat, making it a versatile day hike for all levels. Starting from the city’s edge, the trail winds through ornamental gardens, lakes, and pavilions before climbing toward Moxing Summit—the highest point in the area. While shuttle buses are available to ease the ascent, those who opt to walk will find a mix of paved paths and stair-heavy climbs, with panoramic views of Guangzhou’s skyline rewarding the effort.

Once off the main route, the crowds thin and the trail transforms into a peaceful woodland escape, with dense greenery and quiet paths that feel far removed from the city below. The hike spans around 9 kilometers, with optional extensions depending on your route choices. With its accessibility, scenic variety, and surprising solitude, Baiyun Mountain is a perfect finale to the GBA Getaways series—offering both a breath of fresh air and a deeper appreciation for Guangzhou’s natural side.

DIRECTIONS

1.  Start at the southern entrance gate near the base of Baiyun Mountain and purchase your entry ticket.

2.  Follow the main path uphill toward the ornamental lake and garden area.

3.  At the halfway point, choose to either walk or take the shuttle bus up to the summit trailhead.

4.  Continue along the paved road, passing pavilions and scenic viewpoints as you ascend.

5.  Turn off the main road onto a forest trail to escape the crowds and enter a quieter section of the mountain.

6.  Follow the wooded path until you reach the base of the Moxing Summit stair climb.

7.  Begin the steep ascent via stone steps leading to the summit pavilion.

8.  At the summit, take in panoramic views of Guangzhou’s skyline and surrounding peaks.

9.  Descend via the forested trail that loops down the northern side of the mountain.

10.  Exit near the northern gate and catch a taxi or public transport back to Guangzhou East station.
