Northern Horseshoe

A grand 80-kilometer tour called the Northern Horseshoe spans from Tai Po, skirts alongside the border, passes through Sheung Shui and Tai Lam Chung Country Park, and finally on to Tsuen Wan.

It is a route full of surprises, offering visual feasts such as the Starling Inlet, Nam Sang Wai’s wetlands, and an encounter with a historical walled village in Fanling. A final stretch of pure road riding ends this very challenging route at Tsuen Wan MTR Station.

DIRECTIONS

Get to the start:

This grand tour begins outside Tai Po MTR Station. Get onto the cycle track and follow it towards the Waterfront Park.

At the end, turn right onto Dai Kwai Street and join Ting Kok Road until you reach Tai Mei Tuk.

Continue on past the reservoir entrance, towards Bride’s Pool.

Due to a 400-meter stretch of road where bikes are not permitted, you will need to get off and carefully wheel your bike along the narrow pavement.

At the top and after a 3.5-km climb, you pass Bride’s Pool Waterfall.

Four kilometers of mostly downhill freewheeling brings you to Nam Chung Cheng Uk village.

Turn off onto Shau Tao Kok Road for about 5 kilometers.

Just after the third roundabout, take a righthand turn onto an unmarked side road past industrial buildings, and continue on to Ng tung River.

Follow the river round until you come to the feature called pipeline.

Follow the path under the train line, making a left turn at the exit.

Cross Sheung Yue River following Fai King Rd to Lok Ma Chau.

At Castle Peak Rd, join San Tin Tsuen Rd towards Wai Tsai.

Cross the highway and follow the waterway to the Kam Tin River.

Continue along Kam Ho Rd to Hoi Pui.

Take Hoi Pui Rd up into Tai Lam Cheung Country Park.

Join the Tai Lam Nature Trail.

Crossing the MacLeHose Trail and follow the left-side path round the reservoir.

Get home:

Exit the park to join Castle Peak Rd and onto Tsuen Wan West MTR station.
