Tinworth Trail

Brief Description: The 98-km Tinworth Trail stretches from the northeast corner of the New Territories down to the far west corner of Lantau Island. It was conceived in 2022 to commemorate the life of Nick Tinworth, a Hong Kong trail runner and race organizer who died at just 44 after a struggle with a brain tumor. It’s an unofficial trail, so there are no signposts or infrastructure along the route, but it covers many paths that are missed by the official big four long trails.

Sections 1-2

Hike along the border in the far North East Corner of Hong Kong with spectacular views over Shenzen and the Plover Cove Country Park. In the section section wander through the Pat Sin Leng Country Park and finish with a decent down to Fanling.

Distance: 21 km | Time: 8 hours | Difficulty: 4

Sections 3-4

3-4: Short and sharp best describes these two sections as you climb over 1,600m in just 17.5km. Don’t be put off though as this is a spectacular hike and should be on everyone’s hiking bucket list.

Distance: 17.5km | Time: 8 hours | Difficulty: 5

Sections 5-6

Sections 5-6: These are two of the easiest sections but not without their merits. It’s nice easy stroll downhill through a beautiful forest for section 5 followed by the Yuen Tsuen Ancient Trail which is on our recommended hikes for Hong Kong.

Distance: 15km | Time: 5 hours | Difficulty: 2

Sections 7-8

Sections 7-8: This is an unusual hike in that it covers a part of Lantau that is rarely visited. With 850m of climb it is by no means easy but expect to enjoy some very different views of the airport as well as looking out over Hong Kong Island and Kowloon on the other side.

Distance: 13 km | Time: 6 hours | Difficulty: 3

Sections 9-10

Sections 9-10: Very much a hike of two halves with the first being a horseshoe almost up to the top of Sunset peak and back down to Tung Ching, than a long flat hike along an ancient coastal trail to Tai O.

Distance: 24km | Time: 9 hours | Difficulty: 2
