Wu Tong Mountain, Shenzhen
Wu Tong Mountain in Shenzhen offers one of the most physically demanding yet visually rewarding hikes in the Greater Bay Area. Starting from the bustling plaza at the base, hikers face a steep 600-meter stair climb to the Shenzhen TV Tower, a landmark visible from Hong Kong’s northern hills. The ascent is relentless, but well-maintained steps, frequent rest stops, and drink stalls make it manageable. Once at the tower, the trail flattens out into a scenic ridge walk with sweeping views over the city and across the border into Hong Kong.
After a short road section linking the two peaks, the second climb begins—another 400 meters of steep steps leading to the summit of Wu Tong Shan. From the top, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views stretching from Plover Cove and Sha Tau Kok to the urban sprawl of Shenzhen and even as far as Dongguan. The descent is long but scenic, winding down through forested paths and back into the city where public transport is easily accessible. With a total distance of around 11 kilometers, this hike is a true test of stamina and a spectacular way to see the region from above.
