Hong Kong Coastal Trail

The Hong Kong Islands coastal trail is a 65km trail that circumnavigates the entire island’s coastline. The trail offers a diverse range of experiences, from easy urban walks along the harbor promenade to more challenging treks through remote mountain areas.

Along the way, hikers can enjoy stunning natural scenery, including beaches, rocky coves, waterfalls, and panoramic views of the sunset. The trail also passes by various points of interest, such as temples, swimming sheds, and other cultural and historical sites.

We’ve divided it into 5 different stages, each with its own unique character and level of difficulty. Some sections are easily accessible, while others require more effort to reach due to restricted public access.

Setting off Around Hong Kong Island

Starting off the circumnavigation of Hong Kong Island this hike starts at the Expo Promenade in Wan Chai and takes in the most dramatic promenade walk of the trail. Passing the big wheel and the Central piers it continues on to Kennedy town along a restored promenade with lots to see and do along the way.

Distance: 11 km | Time: 2 hrs | Difficulty: 2

Stanley Ho Wong Chuck Hang

If finding places you have not seen before in Hong Kong is your thing, this walk is sure to deliver. Starting where we left off near the Chicago University campus the hike starts along Victoria Road around Sandy Bay and then drops down to the sports fields at Telegragh Bay.

Distance: 9 km | Time: 2 hrs | Difficulty: 2

Wong Chuk Hang to Stanley

There is a lot of road on this section of the Hong Kong Island Coastal Trail but it also covers one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline including some of Hong Kong’s best beaches. At 9.5 km and with little elevation it makes for a good stretch of the legs without pushing the heart rate too much.

Distance: 9.5 km | Time: 2 hrs | Difficulty: 2

Stanley to Wan Chai

This is the toughest and wildest walk on the coastal trail by a long way. Almost double all the other walks because you need to get from Stanley all the way round to Chai Wan in one long yomp.

Distance: 23 km | Time: 4 hrs | Difficulty: 5

Back to Wan Chai to Chai Wan

This walk feels like a victory lap as you have broken the back of the coastal trail and have one long flat walk in mainly along smooth promenades. It starts with a bit of a faff around Chai Wan working your way from the MTR station slowly down to the promenade at Shau Kei Wan.

Distance: 13 km | Time: 3 hrs | Difficulty: 3
